Born in Kumbakonam, India on 7 August 1925. Educated at Madras and Cambridge Universities.

Former Member of Rajya Sabha, Govt. of India; UNESCO Cousteau Chair in Ecotechnology, and Chairman, M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai.
