Brief Biodata
Dr. Abhishek is presently working as Plant
Virologist in Department of Vegetable Science at Punjab Agricultural
University, Ludhiana under AICRP (Vegetable Crops). His present research areas
of interest are detection, identification and characterization of viruses
infecting vegetables along with resistant source identification for effective
management. Dr. Abhishek obtained his B.Sc. Agriculture (Hons.) from Rajasthan College
of Agriculture, Udaipur (RAU, Bikaner) in the year 1997. He was awarded JRF (ICAR)
for M.Sc. in Plant Pathology from UAS, Bangalore (1997 -99) and Sandoz Biotech
Fellowship for Ph.D. from PAU, Ludhiana (2000-03) He has visited The World
Vegetable Centre, Taiwan and University of Arizona, USA. He is actively
involved in development of varieties resistant to viruses in vegetable crops.
He was member of team who has developed CH-27, a chilli hybrid resistant to
leaf curl disease and wilt. Presently this hybrid has been licensed for
production and marketing of its seed within country to 18 seed companies and is
covering vast area in north western states of the country. His involvement in
development of virus resistant tomato varieties Punjab Varkha Bahar 1, 2, and 4
have made possible to grow tomato during rainy season. Besides, he is also
associated in development of yellow vein mosaic virus resistant variety Punjab
Nawab of Pumpkin and various virus resistant breeding lines in okra, bitter
gourd and muskmelon. He has been
associated with eleven adhoc grants
received from different funding agencies and has published 71 research papers.
He has been awarded Appreciation
Certificate for outstanding research by
PAU and RK Arora Best paper award (2018) by Indian Society of Plant Genetic
Resources, NBPGR, New Delhi.
